Tech Support: All the catagories on my control panel have disappeared

All the catagories on my control panel have disappeared

I am using windows 7 and have had it installed since it was 1st on sale.
Suddenly all the catagories on my control panel have disappeared .
As far as I am aware I haven't done anything, but can't remember the last time I used it.
Also windows explorer does
not respond, so I have to close it down and usually give up and find what I am looking for by some other means.
Any suggestions would be welcome.

·         Is it just the categories (Large icons or small icons) that have disappeared or the items in the control panel are disappeared?
 
Method 1:
 
Step 1: Boot into safe mode and check if the issue persists.

Step 2: If the issue does not occur in safe mode, you may put your system in clean boot state (in normal mode) to troubleshoot the issue.

Method 2:
I would suggest you to try performing SFC (System File Checker) scan 
on your computer and check if the issue still persists.

Also check in event viewer and see what is causing the issue.

To check for Windows updates

1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update.
